An act of quick reflexes and camaraderie captured the attention of many when Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his hand to support Chief Minister MK Stalin as he nearly lost his footing. The two were walking alongside the Sports Minister Udhayanidhi, heading to the venue of the Khelo India Youth Games when the incident occurred. This moment, as much about human connection as the high-profile event they were attending, quickly became a topic of widespread conversation after the footage went viral online.

The sixth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games, held in Chennai, was a showcase of India’s burgeoning aspirations in sports, punctuated by PM Modi’s declaration of India’s intent to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Modi’s speech highlighted the government’s efforts over the past decade to cleanse the sports sector from malpractices, positioning India as a burgeoning hub in the global sports ecosystem. On the other side, MK Stalin voiced his determination to turn Tamil Nadu into the nation’s sports capital, a vision crafted as part of the ‘Dravidian model’ that his government follows. Udhayanidhi Stalin, praised for his dedication to the state’s sports development, was tasked with the goal of capturing global attention. The proof of Tamil Nadu’s escalating role on the sports stage was its recent hosting of international events such as the 44th Chess Olympiad and the Squash World Cup 2023.

Detailing further commitments, Stalin mentioned initiatives including the construction of stadiums specifically for para-athletes and the establishment of Olympic academies and a Sports Science Centre. Furthermore, the Chief Minister pointed to the Khelo India Youth Games as an opportunity for young athletes from conflicted areas like Manipur to showcase their talents on a national platform. In a nod to traditional sports, the ancient art of Silambam was also featured for the first time at the Games. It was a clear signal that while Tamil Nadu has long been leading in sectors like health and education, the arena of sports was fast becoming another feather in its cap.
