On March 5, 2024, in New Delhi, the Congress strongly criticized the statement by DMK leader A Raja, urging the need for caution in public discourse. DMK MP Raja, during a meeting, claimed that India is not a single nation but rather a subcontinent made up of multiple nations, each with its own language, tradition, and culture. He further made contentious remarks about Lord Ram, which were met with severe backlash from the BJP, who accused Raja of promoting ‘Balkanisation’ of the country.

Supriya Shrinate, speaking for Congress, expressed complete disagreement with Raja’s comments on Lord Ram, emphasizing that the deity transcends communities, religions, and castes. During a press conference, Shrinate highlighted the inclusive nature of Lord Ram’s legacy and criticized A Raja’s statements as being divisive. Additionally, Shiv Sena-UBT spokesperson Anand Dubey joined in condemnation, suggesting DMK chief MK Stalin should reign in such expressions within his party ranks.

BJP leader Ravishankar Prasad addressed the controversy by questioning Congress leadership’s stance on Raja’s remarks and accusing the INDIA bloc of consistently undermining India’s ethos and offending Hindu sentiments. Prasad called for respect for all faiths in accordance with Indian traditions. Addressing the variety of cultures within the subcontinent, Raja had previously remarked on the distinct traditions and practices across Indian states, citing the diversity as a testament to the subcontinental nature of India rather than a unified nation. These remarks ignited the debate on cultural diversity and unity within India.
