The BAPS Swaminarayan Temple, representing a beaming example of global harmony and cultural coexistence, has opened its doors in Abu Dhabi. Sprawling over 27 acres, the temple was realized through contributions from diverse community leaders, including the generous donation of half its land by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE President. The temple stands as an architectural celebration of multinational collaboration, with a catholic lead architect, a Sikh project manager, a Buddhist foundational designer, and direct contributions from individuals of Parsi, Jain, and diverse other traditions.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the inaugural event, reminisced about how Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed promptly accepted the temple proposal back in 2015. Symbolizing the unity among the seven emirates of the UAE, the mandir’s design incorporates seven spires amidst its modern surroundings. Constructed at an estimated cost of 400 million dirhams, the breathtaking structure, placed near Al Rahba off the Dubai-Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Highway, embraces pink sandstone and Italian marble, excluding the use of iron in its construct.

The landmark event drew high-profile attendees, including Bollywood icons Akshay Kumar, Vivek Oberoi, and Grammy-winner Shankar Mahadevan, who expressed their joy and reverence on social media for this historic moment. The inauguration not only represents a significant stride for the Hindu community but also serves as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive society. Modi articulated the temple’s significance as a ‘golden chapter of human history,’ marking the amalgamation of India’s ‘Amrit Kaal’ with the universal expression of faith and culture.
