India’s commitment to safeguarding its embassies and diplomats has been strongly voiced by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who insists on a global response against Khalistani activists’ violent activities. These activities include attempts of arson and violent protests aimed at Indian missions globally, notably in countries like Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US. Jaishankar firmly stated that advocating violence and separatism cannot be shielded by freedom of speech. There have been incidents where the Indian high commission in London and the consulate in San Francisco were targeted, leading to heightened diplomatic tensions. Jaishankar expects perpetrator accountability and protection for diplomatic workers.

India’s strained relations with China were also addressed, emphasizing the military standoff on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since May 2020. The clash of two rising nations in the changing world order complicates the goal of equilibrium. Despite attempts through engagements like the informal summits at Wuhan and Mamallapuram, the 2020 military movements by China prompted India to recalibrate its stance, including bolstering military deployment and infrastructure development. Jaishankar noted the dramatic increase in border infrastructure spending as a response to these developments.

Jaishankar’s comments highlight a broader Indian policy that does not condone extremist behavior and seeks to enhance the safety of its citizens and diplomatic missions abroad. The proactive stance against threats in Canada, which led to a temporary halting of visa issuance, underlines this point. Despite various allegations from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, India stands firm against separatist influences and strives for improvement in diplomatic safety. India’s resilient national security measures, according to Jaishankar, are prerequisite for its diplomats’ security and the country’s broader international relations agenda.
