The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, announced on Thursday that Kangra tea, renowned for its quality, aroma, and a hint of fruity flavor, has been registered with the European Union (EU) as a protected Geographical Indication (GI). He said that this registration was an essential step in order to recognize the product’s quality, authenticity and reputation in the European markets, which would lead to an increase in sales and consequently benefit the tea growers of Palampur, Baijnath, Kangra, and Dharamshala in Kangra district, Jogindernagar of Mandi district and Bhattiyat area of Chamba district.

The Tea Board India reports that Kangra tea is milder in flavor than Darjeeling tea and has more body and liquor. The unique characteristics of the tea can be attributed to the climate, the characteristic terrain and soil conditions, and the coolness of the snow-clad mountains in the Kangra region. The first flush of Kangra tea has a distinct aroma and flavor with a fruity tinge. The history of Kangra tea dates back to 1849 when Dr. Jameson, then superintendent of the Botanical Tea Gardens, declared the region suitable for tea cultivation.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that during the British era, Kangra tea was exported to European markets and earned awards from the markets of Amsterdam and London between 1886 and 1895. Without a registration certificate, however, selling Kangra tea in the European markets was not possible until now.

The State Government is also committed to preserving the traditional products of Himachal Pradesh and has launched various initiatives to benefit the local artisans and weavers. The process to secure GI tag for Himachali cap, Sirmauri Loeya, Mandi Sepubari, Chamba metal craft, Kinnauri apple and Kinnauri ornaments is underway.
