Prominent climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk ended his 21-day hunger strike for Ladakh’s statehood and environmental protection, marking the conclusion of phase one of his campaign, but he resolved to persist in his efforts. Starting his fast on March 6, outdoors in the harsh -10 degrees Celsius weather, Wangchuk and 350 supporters sought to bring attention to the region’s fragile ecology and indigenous tribal cultures. Their message was aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, urging protection and statehood.

Wangchuk’s inspiration for his movement can be traced to the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, as he paralleled his protest duration to Gandhi’s longest fast. As Wangchuk broke his fast in the presence of 7,000 supporters, his mission was handed over to various groups within Ladakh, including women, youth, and Buddhist monks, who planned to continue the protest in a relay of dedication. He expressed hope that their collective voices would resonate with the government and prompt the fulfillment of their demands.

Ladakh has experienced significant political transformation since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, leading to its distinction as a separate Union Territory comprised of Leh and Kargil districts. Calls for statehood and the inclusion of majority tribal rights under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution have surged, uniting religiously diverse groups in protest. Despite engagements with the central government and meetings with Home Minister Amit Shah, a satisfactory resolution to the demands of Ladakh’s people remains elusive, prompting Wangchuk and the protestors to embolden their stance in the face of adversity.
