West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sustained an injury after reportedly being pushed and falling at her residence in Kalighat, Kolkata on March 14, 2024. The 69-year-old politician was quickly attended to and taken to the state-run SSKM Hospital. According to SSKM Hospital director Manimoy Bandopadhyay, Ms. Banerjee was admitted with a cerebral concussion and a significant cut on her forehead and nose. She was administered four stitches and discharged later in the evening once her condition was stabilized.

The news of her injury brought concern from across the political spectrum in West Bengal, with leaders conveying wishes for her rapid recovery. Trinamool Congress, the party led by Ms. Banerjee, solicited prayers for her health on social media, while hundreds of people thronged the hospital after the incident. Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, along with other political figures like State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, expressed their well-wishes for the chief minister’s swift recovery. Prior to her fall, Ms. Banerjee had been actively campaigning for Lok Sabha election candidates.

On the following day, it was reported that the West Bengal Chief Minister’s health was stable and she had rested well through the night under the supervision of senior doctors. She underwent a further assessment the next morning. Mamata Banerjee received three stitches on her forehead and one on her nose, with medical tests including ECG, echocardiogram, CT-Scan, and Doppler being performed. Despite the traumatic incident, no formal complaint was registered, and the police have enhanced security measures around her residence. Mamata Banerjee, who is provided with ‘Z+ category’ security, had her safety protocols reviewed following the incident.
